Equality

Equality Statement

At Southbourne infants School, we are committed to ensuring that all pupils, staff, parents and carers should have the opportunity to fulfil their potential whatever their background, identity and circumstances. We are committed to creating a community that recognises and celebrates differences within a culture of respect. We appreciate that a culture which promotes equality will create a positive environment and a shared sense of belonging for all who work, learn and use the services of our school.

We tackle discrimination through the positive promotion of equality, by challenging prejudice and stereotypes and by creating an environment which fosters community cohesion.

We recognise that equality will only be achieved by the whole school community working together, celebrating diversity by all those who learn, teach and visit us.

Equality in Teaching and Learning

We nurture all individuals in their journey to achieve their full and unique potential. We do this through:

  • A common vision, ethos and values, ensuring equality of access for all pupils and preparing them for life in a diverse society;

  • Promoting a sense of belonging, providing opportunities for pupils to appreciate their own culture and celebrate the diversity of others;

  • Utilising teaching approaches and materials which are inclusive and reflect the diversity within the school, community and wider world without stereotyping;

  • Promoting attitudes and values that challenge any discriminatory behaviour or prejudice;

  • Ensuring strong and positive relationships with all parents in supporting their child’s education.

Equality in Admissions and Exclusions

Our admissions arrangements are fair and transparent and do not discriminate on the grounds of race, gender, religion, belief, disability and/or socio-economic background. Please see the Admissions Policy for further details.

Equal Opportunities for Staff

We will make sure that our employment practices are fair and promote equality. All staff appointments are made on the basis of merit and ability and in compliance with the law.

Equality and Diversity is more than just meeting legal obligations. It’s about making a difference to the lives of the children, families and community we serve, treating everyone with respect and recognising the value of each individual. This means an ongoing commitment to ensuring that our school meets the varied and individual needs of the children, through reflecting the principles of this statement in our policies and procedures and everything we do.
