Geography

Intent We aim to provide a high quality Geography curriculum which inspires the child's curiosity and fascination about the world we live in and the people within it.

Implementation Geography is taught through half termly or termly topics and cross curricular outcomes are specifically planned for. Children are given the opportunity to convey what they already know which therefore allows relevant starting points for all children. Our teaching equips children with knowledge about places and people; resources in the environment and physical and human processes. We also want the children to develop geographical skills: using maps, globes, aerial photographs and computer programmes to name and identify countries, capital cities, continents and oceans. We ensure that the key skills children learn and develop are mapped to ensure progression between year groups. Children and teachers can also review and evaluate each individual session by the schools traffic light self-assessment. For children to understand the skills they are being taught and then how these are applied in different scenarios, ‘real life’ experiences are used. For example, using the local area and school grounds for map skills.

Impact Outcomes in topic and literacy books will evidence the key knowledge children have found out throughout a topic. As the children progress through the school, they develop a deeper knowledge and understanding, and  an appreciation of their local area and its place within the wider geographical context. . Children will also be equipped with geographical skills and knowledge that they will be able to draw upon as they continue the curriculum in the Junior school.
